Qatar Joins the Madrid System for International Trademark Protection

On May 3, 2024, Qatar achieved a milestone in intellectual property by joining the Madrid Protocol, overseen by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This significant step expands the Madrid System to 131 countries, with Qatar becoming the 115th member.

What Changes with Qatar’s Accession?

Starting August 3, 2024, trademark owners in Qatar will significantly benefit from this accession. With a single application, in one of three official languages (Spanish, French, or English), and a single fee payment in Swiss francs, it will be possible to register a trademark in up to 130 countries simultaneously. This simplifies the international trademark protection process, eliminating multiple procedures and reducing costs.

For foreign brands, Qatar’s entry into the system eases the protection of their trademarks in this strategically important Gulf market. Additionally, any existing international registration can be extended to include Qatar, enhancing protection coverage.
